Compare powerlifting strength across body weights and between male and female athletes

What is the Wilks score?

The Wilks score is a coefficient used in powerlifting to compare the strength of competitors across different body weights and between male and female lifters. It was developed by Robert Wilks, former CEO of Powerlifting Australia, and adopted by most federations through the 2000s and 2010s.

The calculation applies a fifth-degree polynomial to body weight, with separate coefficient sets for men and women. Your total lifted (squat + bench press + deadlift, in kg) is multiplied by that coefficient to produce a single number that, in theory, lets a 60 kg lifter and a 120 kg lifter be ranked on the same scale.

How to read your score

  • Below 250 — Novice lifter
  • 250 to 349 — Intermediate
  • 350 to 449 — Advanced
  • 450 and above — Elite, competitive at national and international level

Top-level meets routinely produce Wilks scores between 450 and 600. A score above 500 is widely regarded as world-class, and the all-time records sit around 700 in tested federations and even higher in untested ones.

Wilks vs DOTS, IPF GL and the newer formulas

The IPF has since moved to its own IPF GL points formula, and the DOTS coefficient is used by USAPL and most non-IPF federations in North America. These newer formulas address two known weaknesses of the Wilks: it under-rewards super-heavyweight lifters and the female coefficients are now considered out of date. Despite this, Wilks remains the most widely understood number at amateur and gym level, and is still useful for tracking your own progression year over year.

One last point: the score is body-weight normalized, not drug-tested normalized. A Wilks of 500 on tested gear and a Wilks of 500 on full juice are very different feats. Federations report this separately — the calculator does not, and cannot. Use it to compare yourself to yourself first.
